Ex-Rockstar dev pushes for GTA 4 remaster

by Riley Apr 29,2026

A former Rockstar developer has weighed in on recent speculation about a potential GTA 4 re-release for modern consoles, advocating instead for a full remaster of the classic title.

GTA 4 Remaster Speculation Heats Up

The rumor originated with noted GTA insider Tez2, who suggested Rockstar may be preparing a current-gen port of GTA 4. This speculation gained traction after Rockstar reportedly shut down a popular Liberty City mod for GTA 5.

However, it's important to note Rockstar hasn't confirmed any plans regarding GTA 4, especially with the studio fully focused on GTA 6 development.

Developer Perspective

Obbe Vermeij, Rockstar's former technical director (1995-2009), wasn't aware of the rumors but strongly supported the idea of a GTA 4 remaster. "It deserves the remaster treatment," Vermeij stated. "Niko remains the most compelling protagonist in GTA history in my opinion."

The veteran developer suggested Rockstar could rebuild the game using their latest RAGE engine technology, similar to recent successful remasters like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Realistic Expectations

Industry analysts remain skeptical about Rockstar's capacity for a GTA 4 remaster given their current GTA 6 workload. While an external studio could theoretically handle development, releasing both titles simultaneously in 2025 seems strategically unlikely.

Liberty City's Future

Some fans speculate Liberty City might appear in GTA 6 as either launch content or post-release DLC. The iconic fictional New York setting previously appeared in both GTA 4 and its Chinatown Wars spinoff.

While we await official announcements, comprehensive GTA 6 coverage continues, including newly discovered details, over 70 screenshots, and technical analysis of its performance on PlayStation 5 Pro.
