ETHOS: 2K's Unique Hero Shooter Emerges
Project ETHOS: 2K's Innovative Roguelike Hero Shooter Now in Playtest
2K Games and 31st Union have launched a free-to-play playtest for their ambitious new title, Project ETHOS, a roguelike hero shooter aiming to redefine the genre. The playtest runs from October 17th to 21st, offering players a chance to experience the unique blend of roguelike progression and hero-based combat.
A Fresh Take on Hero Shooters
Project ETHOS distinguishes itself through its dynamic "Evolutions" system. These randomized in-match upgrades dramatically alter hero abilities, forcing players to adapt their strategies on the fly. Transform a sniper into a close-quarters combatant or bolster a support character into a solo powerhouse – the possibilities are endless.
The game features two core modes:
-
Trials: A signature mode where three-player teams battle human and AI opponents. Collect Cores, strategically choose extraction timing, and invest them in Augments to enhance future runs. Death means losing your Cores, adding a high-stakes element to each match. Players can join ongoing matches, but be aware of the remaining time and potential for immediate high-level encounters. XP is earned through various means, including eliminating enemies and completing map events.
-
Gauntlet: A traditional competitive PvP tournament mode. Players battle through brackets, upgrading their hero with each victory, until a final showdown determines the winner. Elimination means waiting for the next round.
How to Participate in the Playtest
The playtest is currently limited to players in the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Access is granted by watching participating Twitch streams for 30 minutes to receive a playtest key. You can also register on the official website for future playtest opportunities.
Server uptime for the playtest is as follows:
North America:
- October 17th: 10 AM – 11 PM PT
- October 18th-20th: 11 AM – 11 PM PT
Europe:
- October 17th: 6 PM – 1 AM GMT+1
- October 18th-21st: 1 PM – 1 AM GMT+1
31st Union's Debut
Project ETHOS represents 31st Union's first major release, led by Call of Duty veteran Michael Condrey. His experience is evident in the game's polished multiplayer design. While a release date remains unannounced, the developers' innovative approach and community-focused marketing strategy through Twitch and Discord are intriguing.
