Elden Ring Nightreign: Raider Class Hands-On - IGN First

If you're a fan of Elden Ring's diverse playstyles, particularly the thrill of wielding massive strength-based weapons to crush foes with devastating jumping attacks and charged heavy strikes, then you'll find the Raider in Nightreign to be a perfect fit. Check out the video below for a closer look at this class in action.

Play

While the Guardian, another robust class with ample health and a preference for large weapons, focuses on defense with a shield as its starter weapon and an ultimate ability that shields the entire party from damage for an extended period, the Raider is designed as a relentless offensive powerhouse.

The cornerstone of the Raider's arsenal is the Retaliate ability, which might initially seem underwhelming with just two stomps that deliver modest physical and poise damage. However, the true power of Retaliate lies in the Raider's passive ability, which prevents knockdowns during its execution. This essentially provides a free damage-soaking technique that allows you to plow through nearly any enemy or boss attack unscathed. Moreover, if you successfully absorb a significant hit, the weak second stomp transforms into a potent punch capable of staggering even the mightiest of foes.

The Raider's ultimate, Totem Stela, involves slamming the ground to summon a massive totem that inflicts substantial damage to surrounding enemies. Like other ultimates in Nightreign, it's a game-changer in combat. Beyond its destructive power, the totem can be climbed, offering both you and your teammates a strategic vantage point or a safe haven. Additionally, it boosts everyone's damage, making it a crucial ability to coordinate with your team for maximum effect.

Among all the classes in Nightreign, the Raider stands out as the most enjoyable for me. Starting with the Raider's Greataxe, which inflicts fire damage and comes equipped with the "Endure" skill to help absorb and withstand enemy attacks when Retaliate is on cooldown, it sets a solid foundation. As you progress through the game, upgrading to larger strength-scaling weapons becomes essential to fully harness the Raider's potential.

The Raider excels in one-on-one battles, which aligns well with its unique Remembrances that involve fighting in gladiatorial arenas. This distinct style offers a refreshing change of pace and adds to the class's appeal.

That concludes our hands-on impressions of Nightreign's classes. Stay tuned throughout the month for in-depth looks at the game's mechanics, developer interviews, and more as part of IGN First's continued coverage.
