Elden Ring Live-Action Film Adaptation Officially in Development

Visionary Director Alex Garland Attached to Project

The long-awaited live-action adaptation of Elden Ring has officially entered development, as confirmed by publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and American film studio A24.

Acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland (known for Ex Machina, Civil War, and Annihilation) will direct and write the movie. His creative vision aims to "bring the epic world and intense action" of Elden Ring to life on the big screen. The film will be produced by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich of DNA Films, alongside George R. R. Martin, the creator of A Song of Ice and Fire, and Vince Gerardis, former co-executive producer of Game of Thrones. It remains unclear whether FromSoftware’s president and Elden Ring director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, will play a role in the production.

Details regarding the plot, cast, and release date have not yet been disclosed, but fans are eagerly awaiting further updates. More announcements are expected in the near future.

Elden Ring Continues to Thrive in 2025

While the Elden Ring movie may still be in early development, the game series continues to gain momentum. The original title launched in 2022 and quickly became a global phenomenon, selling over 13.4 million copies within just five weeks. As of April 2025, total sales have surpassed 30 million units worldwide—a milestone celebrated by the official Elden Ring X (Twitter) account in gratitude to the Tarnished who continue to explore the Lands Between.

Beyond its commercial success, Elden Ring has also received critical acclaim, earning an impressive 324 Game of the Year awards across numerous publications and award ceremonies. Its 2024 expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, was met with similarly glowing reviews, continuing the legacy of the base game.

FromSoftware shows no signs of slowing down in 2025, with two major new releases planned for the Elden Ring universe.

First up is Elden Ring: Nightreign, a cooperative action spinoff set in the realm of Limveld. In this title, players take on the role of Nightfarers—heroes tasked with halting the rise of the mysterious Nightlord. While retaining key elements from the original game, Nightreign reimagines them for a fresh multiplayer co-op experience. It is scheduled to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on May 30th, 2025.

In addition, a definitive edition of Elden Ring titled the Tarnished Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. This version includes the full base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, four exclusive armor sets, and a customization feature for the three variants of Torrent the Spectral Steed. Although not a launch title for the new console, this enhanced edition ensures that Elden Ring will be among the first major titles available on the Switch 2.
