Eddie Murphy Joins Pink Panther Reboot in Key Role

by Adam Mar 27,2026

The legendary Eddie Murphy is stepping back in front of the camera for another exciting project – and it’s one of his most entertaining roles yet. The beloved comedian recently confirmed he will appear in an upcoming Pink Panther movie, taking on a key part in the story.

During a July 28 interview on the Today show, Murphy casually shared the news: "I'm going to be Inspector Clouseau in the next Pink Panther. That's right — I'm the new Clouseau."

Co-host Al Roker asked whether he would play the iconic character with the classic French accent. Murphy replied, "Possibly. Of course, he has to be French — but maybe Haitian too. I can tell you this: he’s definitely Black."

In May 2023, reports emerged that Murphy was in talks to star in a Pink Panther reboot directed by Jeff Fowler of Sonic the Hedgehog fame. However, that version of the film seems to have stalled. Although specific details about this new iteration are still under wraps, fans won’t have to wait long for updates.

The original Pink Panther debuted in 1963. Murphy’s role — the bumbling yet essential Inspector Clouseau — was first portrayed by Peter Sellers, who later reprised it in five sequels. Following Sellers' death in 1980 at age 54, Steve Martin took over the role for two sequels in the 2000s: 2006’s The Pink Panther and its follow-up, The Pink Panther 2, released three years later.

Murphy is also busy with other projects. He’s currently working on Shrek 5, scheduled for a Christmas release next year. He also stars in the action-comedy The Pickup, premiering on Prime Video August 6.
