Discover Minecraft Stronghold Secrets and Locations
In the vast and blocky world of *Minecraft*, few structures are as intriguing or rewarding as the stronghold. These sprawling underground fortresses hold secrets, treasures, and one of the game’s most crucial objectives — the portal to The End and the Ender Dragon. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or a curious newcomer, understanding how to locate and navigate a stronghold is essential for completing your Minecraft journey.
What is a Stronghold in Minecraft?

A stronghold is an ancient, sprawling underground structure buried beneath the surface of the Minecraft world. Unlike villages or temples, strongholds are not easily found — they’re hidden deep below ground and contain a variety of rooms, including libraries, prisons, fountains, secret chambers, and most importantly, an altar room with a portal to The End.
This portal is the only way to reach the Ender Dragon, the final boss of the game. To activate it, players must gather and use Eyes of Ender — a special item that also helps locate the stronghold itself.
How to Find a Stronghold in Minecraft
Eye of Ender

The primary and intended method for locating a stronghold is by using the Eye of Ender. This item can be crafted by combining an Ender Pearl (dropped by Endermen or traded with villagers) and Blaze Powder (obtained from crafting Blaze Rods).
Once crafted, simply use the Eye of Ender while holding it — it will float in the air for a few seconds, pointing you in the direction of the nearest stronghold. However, each use consumes the item, so it's wise to craft at least 10–12 before beginning your search.
You’ll need around 12 Eyes of Ender to activate the End Portal, but gathering more is recommended for both navigation and emergencies. In total, you may want to carry about 30 Eyes of Ender to ensure a smooth experience.
The Locate Command
For players who prefer a quicker route or are playing on a world where cheats are enabled, the /locate
command offers a fast solution:
/locate structure stronghold
If you're running version 1.20 or higher, this command will provide the coordinates of the nearest stronghold. Once you have them, teleport there using:
/tp
Keep in mind that this gives the general location of the stronghold, not the exact entrance. You'll still need to dig and explore to uncover the full structure.
Stronghold Rooms
Strongholds are composed of multiple interconnected rooms, each with its own unique design and potential rewards.
Library

The library is a large chamber made of stone bricks and bookshelves, often shrouded in cobwebs. It’s usually located deep within the stronghold and may appear more than once. Chests nearby often contain enchanted books and other valuable loot — perfect for upgrading your gear.
Prison

This maze-like section features narrow corridors, iron bars, and dim lighting. Expect to encounter skeletons, zombies, and even creepers lurking in the shadows. Be cautious — the prison can be dangerous if you’re unprepared.
Fountain

A standout feature in many strongholds, the fountain room contains a central water source surrounded by mossy stone bricks. While it doesn’t typically offer loot, it adds a mystical atmosphere and serves as a visual landmark during exploration.
Secret Rooms

Some walls within the stronghold conceal hidden rooms. By breaking through these blocks, you may discover chests containing rare items, enchanted books, or even traps. Watch out for pressure plates and arrows — some surprises are deadly!
Altar

The altar room houses the End Portal frame — the key objective of any stronghold visit. Surrounded by torches and stone bricks, the central platform appears almost like a prison cell rather than a sacred site. This is where you’ll place Eyes of Ender to activate the portal to The End.
Stronghold Mobs

While exploring the fortress, you’ll encounter several hostile mobs, including:
- Skeletons
- Creepers
- Silverfish
Although none of these enemies are particularly difficult, the confined spaces and low lighting make encounters more intense. Bring torches, armor, and weapons to stay safe.
Rewards
Every chest in a stronghold has the chance to drop useful and rare items, such as:
- Enchanted books
- Iron chestplate
- Iron sword
- Iron horse armor
- Gold horse armor
- Diamond horse armor
These items can significantly enhance your gameplay, especially if you're preparing for your first battle against the Ender Dragon.
Portal to the Ender Dragon

Once you've activated the portal with Eyes of Ender, stepping through will transport you to The End — a floating island dimension where the Ender Dragon awaits. Defeating it marks a major milestone in Minecraft, opening up new dimensions like The End City and offering powerful loot such as the Elytra.
Exploring a stronghold isn't just about reaching the endgame — it's an adventure in itself. From eerie libraries to hidden treasure rooms, every stronghold offers something new. So grab your tools, light up the darkness, and dive into the depths of Minecraft's mysterious fortresses.
