Nintendo Sends "Out of Stock" Signs Ahead of Switch 2 Launch

by Patrick Dec 16,2025

Nintendo has reportedly started distributing "Out of Stock" signs branded for the Switch 2 to retailers, even before the console officially launches.

The Switch 2 is scheduled to release in just two days—on Thursday, June 5—and Nintendo is anticipating that demand will exceed available inventory.

As shared on Reddit (via VGC), official Switch 2 "Out of Stock" signs are appearing in U.S. stores alongside standard promotional materials for the console and the launch title Mario Kart World. "We received these signs from Nintendo," wrote a Reddit user who works at a store planning a midnight launch event for the console. "They’ve got a sense of humor."

Nintendo has already cautioned consumers about potential Switch 2 shortages, with supplies expected to be especially tight in Japan due to overwhelming demand. In the U.S., the company is navigating ongoing tariff uncertainties for Chinese-manufactured goods by prioritizing consoles produced in Vietnam.

That said, nearly every successful console faces stock challenges at launch, and many eager customers have already scrambled to secure their Switch 2 pre-orders. In short, a sell-out seems almost inevitable.

These "Out of Stock" signs serve a practical purpose, helping store staff manage the expected flood of inquiries about console availability.

"Every retail employee knows they’ll face countless customers standing in front of that sign, demanding they check 'the back' as if the stockroom were some magical electronics Narnia," one user commented.

At the same time, informing customers that an item is out of stock can subtly reinforce its popularity and high demand. In other words, it doubles as effective marketing.

"This is a clever advertising tactic to make consumers feel the urge to buy," another fan noted. "It signals high demand and creates a psychological need to secure one."

Ahead of the Switch 2's launch, Nintendo has rolled out updates for the original Switch and the beloved Animal Crossing: New Horizons to ensure compatibility with the new hardware. We also got a first look last night at enhanced versions of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on the Switch 2.

For those fortunate enough to get a Switch 2 this week, Nintendo recently shared important guidance about not removing the protective plastic film from the console's screen.
