The narrative begins in the autonomous province of Northumbria, situated in the northwest region of Zemuria, unfolding between the events of "Trails of Cold Steel II" and "Trails of Cold Steel III." The Northern Campaign follows protagonist Lavi, a skilled huntress serving in the North Ambria's Jaeger corps featured in the TV anime adaptation.

Lavi, raised in Northumbria, joins the elite Jaegers of the North to defend her homeland and redeem her family honor from her grandfather Vlad's betrayal.
