Switch 2 Zelda: Breath of the Wild lacks DLC

by Isabella Dec 03,2025

As confusion lingers among fans about Nintendo Switch 2 pricing (particularly in the fluctuating US market), we've uncovered another potential hidden cost. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch 2 won't include the Expansion Pass - meaning players will need to pay an extra $20 for DLC access unless they already own it.

While this might seem obvious, there's significant confusion around the Switch 2's pricing structure. Current information confirms that existing Switch owners can play their purchased copy of Breath of the Wild on Switch 2, including any previously bought DLC, without issues.

However, the new Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition offers visual upgrades, performance enhancements, achievements, and compatibility with the new "Zelda Notes" service. Existing owners can purchase a $10 upgrade to access these features.

For new buyers, the situation becomes more complex: - $70 for the Enhanced Edition (a $10 premium over original launch price) - Additional $20 for DLC access - Total $90 for the complete upgraded experience

Nintendo confirmed this pricing structure to IGN: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase."

While this technically matches what existing owners have paid (original purchase + DLC + upgrade), it contrasts with industry norms where older games typically see price reductions or include DLC in re-releases. The $90 total for a 2017 game (originally released on Wii U) feels particularly steep alongside Mario Kart World's unprecedented $80 price tag and the Switch 2's expected $450+ price point.

Most potential players likely already own the base game, given its massive sales. But for those holding out for the upgraded version, the DLC becomes an important budgeting consideration - especially for players wanting to experience both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on the new system.
