In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, there’s no dedicated sprint button; your character automatically sprints after a few steps. While sprinting is quick, covering vast battlefields to reach allies or secure victory often demands greater speed.

This is where horses shine, summonable anytime in the overworld or during combat. You can also engage enemies from horseback for swift, tactical strikes. Below, learn how to unlock your first horse, boost its capabilities, and switch between mounts.

Acquiring Your First Horse in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

You can claim your first horse for free in Chapter 1 by speaking with a merchant in the overworld. This merchant appears after completing the second major battle, "Test of Zheng Fei," as you travel toward the Battle of Guangzong. Head northeast from Wan Castle, and before reaching the camp, you’ll spot the merchant beside his horse. Speak to him to receive the horse, which is automatically equipped.

Summon your horse instantly by pressing down on the left joystick (console) or the V key (keyboard).

Enhancing Your Horse’s Abilities in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Your horse gains experience points (XP) based on missions completed while it’s equipped, even if unused. XP is earned from main story battles and missions—marked by a red diamond with a soldier icon—but not from Skirmishes. The amount of XP depends on battle duration, how often you ride, and whether you charge into enemies. Leveling up unlocks unique buffs every few levels, varying by horse.

Switching Horses in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Your first horse is equipped by default, but you can acquire and equip other horses. Access the Battle Preparation menu and select the horse option, the last item on the left. Each horse offers unique perks, with some being faster or stronger, so consider switching when you acquire a new one. To unlock additional horses, max out a region’s peace level; a new horse will be rewarded at a nearby waypoint.
