Talystro: Math Meets RPG in Upcoming Roguelike Deckbuilder

If you've been following us for a while, you're likely familiar with our parent company's event, Pocket Gamer Connects. One of our highlights at these events is the Big Indie Pitch, where we showcase innovative new indie games to a panel of judges. Today, we're excited to spotlight one of the top runners-up that caught our eye: the math-battling roguelike, Talystro!

At first glance, Talystro might blend in with the crowd of deckbuilding roguelikes—a genre that's currently riding a wave of popularity. However, a closer look reveals what made it stand out. Talystro ingeniously combines cards and dice mechanics, allowing you to play as the math mouse on a quest to overthrow the evil Necrodicer.

So, how does it work? You'll use a blend of dice rolls and card draws to reach a target number, effectively eliminating enemies represented by numerical values. Be mindful, though; you're limited to a certain number of dice per turn, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.

ytCrypt of the NecrodicerTalystro boasts a unique visual style, blending rubber hose animation with a fantasy aesthetic reminiscent of educational math games from your childhood. While the game sticks to basic, entry-level mathematics, its gameplay is both captivating and easy to pick up, making it accessible yet challenging.

Set for release in March, Talystro promises a simple-to-understand yet hard-to-master format—a balance that many deckbuilders struggle to achieve. This approach is likely to be what draws players in and keeps them engaged.
