by Lily Apr 19,2025

The eagerly anticipated Switch 2 is stirring excitement with new features for its Joy-Con controllers, notably hinting at mouse support. A recent patent filed by Nintendo and published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025, sheds light on this innovation. This patent comes on the heels of the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which teased the controller's potential use as a mouse by showing it being dragged across a flat surface.

New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The Switch 2's Joy-Con is set to revolutionize gameplay with its mouse-like capabilities. The patent details how the controller's sensor detects reflected light from a surface, allowing it to function as a mouse when dragged across it. While Nintendo remains secretive about the Switch 2, this patent has fueled speculation and excitement about the new functionalities of the Joy-Con.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Joy-Con for the Switch 2 maintains the detachable design of its predecessor, but introduces the innovative mouse feature. According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface." This opens up new possibilities for gameplay and interaction.

In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new dock capable of charging two controllers simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment connects the Joy-Con to the console, featuring a wrist strap similar to the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con. The patent also introduces a new pair of controllers, split like a standard controller, each equipped with an optical sensor and capable of functioning as a mouse. These can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.

It's important to note that these features, as described in the patent, may not all make it to the final product. Nintendo has not officially confirmed these functionalities for the Switch 2.
