For over a decade, fans have yearned for a return to the beloved Suikoden series. That wait is almost over. The upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to not only reignite the passion of longtime fans but also introduce a new generation to this classic JRPG franchise.

A New Generation, A Renewed Hope

The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster, based on the 2006 Japanese PlayStation Portable release, promises a revitalized experience. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that this remaster will act as a springboard for future Suikoden titles. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, paid tribute to the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series creator, stating his belief that Murayama would have wanted to be involved. Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, emphasized his desire to reintroduce Suikoden to a wider audience, hoping to see the franchise expand.

Enhanced Visuals and Gameplay Refinements

Visually, the remaster boasts enhanced HD backgrounds, creating more immersive and detailed environments. While the original pixel art sprites are polished, their classic charm remains intact. A new Gallery mode offers access to music, cutscenes, and an event viewer, allowing players to revisit key moments.

The remaster also rectifies issues from the original PSP release. The infamous shortened Luca Blight cutscene in Suikoden 2 is restored to its original length, and certain dialogues have been updated to align with modern sensibilities (e.g., removing instances of smoking to reflect Japanese smoking bans).

A March 2025 Launch Across Multiple Platforms

Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster is slated for release on March 6, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
