"Street Fighter Film Gets New Director"

by Alexis Mar 27,2025

A new Street Fighter movie is set to hit the screens, and it has found its director in Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the wildly comedic The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this latest adaptation for Legendary Entertainment, with Capcom playing a significant role in the project. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

This marks another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen, following the memorable 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While critics at the time may not have been kind, the movie has since become a cult classic.

Details on casting are still under wraps, but fans can anticipate seeing their beloved Street Fighter characters in this new iteration. Originally, directors Danny and Michael Philippou, known for Talk to Me, were set to direct but left the project last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more absurdist and perhaps cartoonish style, which could be a thrilling direction for fans of the game's more whimsical elements.

In the meantime, gamers can dive into the latest installment, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced the new fighter Mai Shiranui. For more insights, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review here.
