Stephen King Writing for Mike Flanagan's Dark Tower: Confirmed at IGN Fan Fest 2025

by Jack May 15,2025

Mike Flanagan's upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's epic fantasy saga, The Dark Tower, promises to be a faithful rendition of the beloved novels. With Flanagan's proven track record of successfully adapting King's works such as Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game, fans have high expectations. Adding to the excitement, IGN has exclusively revealed that Stephen King himself has joined Flanagan's creative team, known as the Ka-tet, to ensure the adaptation remains true to the source material.

In a roundtable interview promoting his work on The Monkey, King hinted at his involvement in The Dark Tower project. When asked about contributing new material, similar to his work on the 2020 Paramount+ series The Stand, King responded, "All I can say is it's happening. I am writing stuff now and I think that's all I want to say because the next thing you know, I'll stir up a bunch of stuff I don't necessarily want to stir up yet. I'm in process right now, and to say too much feels like a jinx." This statement confirms King's active participation and suggests new content that will enrich the adaptation.

The Dark Tower series, which King began writing in 1970 with The Gunslinger, is one of his most celebrated and personal works. The involvement of King in Flanagan's adaptation opens up numerous possibilities for expanding the already vast mythology that connects nearly all of King's fiction. King's previous contribution to the Paramount+ series The Stand, where he wrote an epilogue to better conclude the story of Frannie Goldsmith, showcases his willingness to enhance his narratives.

Given Flanagan's commitment to staying true to King's vision, as stated in a 2022 IGN interview where he emphasized that "it would look like the books" and warned against turning The Dark Tower into something like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, King's new material should seamlessly integrate into the adaptation. Flanagan further elaborated, "It is what it is, what it is is perfect. It's just as exciting as all of those things and just as immersive. It's a story about a tiny group of people, all the odds in the whole world are against them, and they come together. As long as it's that, it'll be fine and there won't be a dry eye in the house."

This approach is a welcome contrast to the 2017 film adaptation of The Dark Tower, which received criticism for its mishandling of the source material. While the exact release date and format of Flanagan's adaptation remain uncertain, fans can look forward to other King projects from Flanagan, including the upcoming theatrical release of The Life of Chuck in May and a Carrie series for Amazon based on King's 1974 novel.
