Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review

Despite the usual yearly sports game skepticism, NBA 2K25 stands out. It's the first PC version since the PS5 launch to feature the "Next Gen" experience, and it's officially optimized for Steam Deck (though not yet officially rated by Valve). My experience across PC, Steam Deck, and consoles reveals a satisfying, albeit not flawless, game.

Key improvements for PC players include ProPLAY technology (previously exclusive to PS5/Xbox Series X) and the WNBA and MyNBA modes. If you've held off on recent PC releases, NBA 2K25 delivers the full experience. Let's hope its success ensures continued Next Gen PC versions and ongoing Steam Deck optimization.

The Steam Deck and PC versions boast 16:10 and 800p support. AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS are included, but I found disabling them improved clarity. Other adjustable settings include v-sync, dynamic v-sync (targeting 90/45fps), HDR (Steam Deck compatible), texture detail, overall quality, and shader options. Caching shaders on initial boot is recommended.

Extensive graphics options are available, allowing fine-tuning of shader detail, shadows, player/crowd detail, NPC density, and more. I preferred a lower setting configuration to enhance clarity. Capping the framerate to 60fps at 60hz via the Steam Deck quick access menu provided the best stability and visual quality. The default Steam Deck preset, while functional, appeared overly blurry.

Offline play is limited; MyCAREER and MyTEAM require an internet connection. Quick play and eras modes work offline, though, with faster load times.

While technically inferior to console versions, the Steam Deck provides a superior portable experience. Load times are slower than on PS5/Xbox Series X, and there’s no crossplay with consoles. Microtransactions remain a concern, particularly for certain modes. At $69.99, the price point is higher than previous years.

NBA 2K25 delivers a fantastic portable basketball experience on Steam Deck, matching the PS5/Xbox Series X feature set. With some adjustments, it looks and plays great. Just be mindful of the microtransactions.

NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5

Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions

Unfamiliar with Gimmick! 2? Check out Shaun's Switch review here. It runs smoothly on Steam Deck (unverified, but with recent Linux/Steam Deck fixes). Capped at 60fps, forcing your Steam Deck screen to 60hz (especially on OLED) prevents jitter. While lacking graphics options, it supports 16:10 for menus (gameplay remains 16:9). A strong contender for future Steam Deck Verification.

The 60fps cap isn't a significant drawback. It plays flawlessly out of the box, and the gameplay aligns perfectly with Shaun's positive review.

Arco Steam Deck Mini Review

Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG, has undergone significant improvements since its initial release. This Steam Deck review focuses on the updated Steam version. The combat system, audio, and story are surprisingly compelling. It blends real-time and turn-based elements, defying simple genre categorization.

Steam Deck Verified, it runs smoothly at 60fps (16:9 only). An assist mode (beta) allows combat skipping and other adjustments, including skipping the first act on replays.

Arco is a highly recommended tactical RPG with a memorable narrative, exceptional visuals, music, and dynamic gameplay. A free demo is available on Steam.

Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5

Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review

Newly available on Steam, Skull and Bones is a playable (not verified) title on Steam Deck. Initial setup requires a Ubisoft Connect login, which isn't seamless. For stable performance, I recommend a 30fps cap, 16:10 resolution at 800p, and FSR 2 quality upscaling. Lower settings (except textures) further optimize performance.

Early impressions suggest potential, particularly with recent updates. It’s an online-only experience. A free trial is recommended before a full purchase.

A difficult recommendation at full price, but worth considering with the free trial, especially for fans of naval combat and open-world Ubisoft games. Cross-progression is available with console versions.

Skull and Bones Steam Deck review score: TBA

ODDADA Steam Deck Review

ODDADA, a music-creation tool, functions as an interactive toy. Its aesthetic is reminiscent of Windosill. It utilizes mouse or touch controls on the Steam Deck, progressing through levels and instruments. The randomness ensures unique creations.

It runs flawlessly at 90fps with adjustable resolution, v-sync, and anti-aliasing. Menu text is somewhat small. Controller support is absent but touch controls work well.

Highly recommended for music and art enthusiasts. Touch controls are ideal, despite the lack of controller support (currently in development).

ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5

Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review

Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration. While not fully satisfying either genre, it might appeal to a niche audience. It runs well on Proton Experimental. The gameplay loop involves space exploration, job completion, and unlocking new content. Visuals, writing, and radio banter are highlights.

Extensive graphics settings are available, including resolution (16:10 supported). I used a custom low-shadows preset for around 40fps. Controls could use improvement.

Star Trucker's unique blend of genres is appealing, but controls need refinement.

Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia, a visual novel, is a worthy sequel to Rio Reincarnation. It features a compelling narrative, multiple paths, returning characters, and excellent artwork. The tone is lighter than its predecessor.

It runs perfectly on Steam Deck (720p, 16:9). Check system settings to ensure correct button configuration and aspect ratio.

Highly recommended for fans of the series. Playing Rio Reincarnation beforehand is suggested.

DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Review Score: 4/5

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES Steam Deck Review Impressions

Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES is an enhanced re-release of the original, significantly expanding content with new factions and the Dynasty system.

While lacking controller support, it's playable using trackpad and touch controls. Early impressions are positive.

Pinball FX Steam Deck Impressions

Pinball FX offers a wide array of PC graphics options, including HDR support on Steam Deck. The gameplay is enjoyable, and the free-to-play version allows sampling before purchasing DLC.

Highly recommended, even without purchasing DLC. The free version is a great way to test the game and its Steam Deck performance.

New Steam Deck Verified & Playable games for the week

Notable additions include Hookah Haze and OneShot: World Machine Edition (Verified). Black Myth: Wukong's "Unsupported" status is surprising given its performance.

The Games from Croatia sale offers discounts on Talos Principle and other titles. The sale ends Monday morning.
