Star Wars Outlaws Gets More Bad Sales News

Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is facing significant challenges. Released in August 2024, the game, while initially receiving positive reviews, has underwhelmed in sales, falling short of Ubisoft's expectations. This underperformance contributed to a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price shortly after launch.

Adding to the woes, recent reports indicate that Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Star Wars Outlaws' relatively poor performance is evident, ranking 47th in European video game sales for 2024. Player feedback points to dissatisfaction with the game's combat and stealth mechanics, issues addressed in subsequent updates, but apparently not enough to significantly boost sales.

Several factors likely contribute to Jedi: Survivor's superior performance. As a sequel to the successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. Furthermore, a later update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One revitalized interest.

In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The first DLC, "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, launched in November 2024. A second expansion, "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune," is planned for Spring 2025, introducing Hondo Ohnaka. Whether this post-launch content will be enough to revive Outlaws' fortunes remains to be seen.

The disparity in performance highlights the challenges of creating a successful open-world Star Wars game, contrasting with the success of a more focused, narrative-driven single-player experience.
