Launching September 26, Marvel's Spider-Man marks Magic's second fully draftable, Standard-legal Universes Beyond set after Final Fantasy, and the third overall following 2023's Modern-legal Lord of the Rings collaboration. Unlike previous releases, it won't include preconstructed Commander decks—the cards in the Scene Box shown above won't be Standard-legal, as they're specifically designed for Commander gameplay.
While last year's Wolverine and Captain America Secret Lair introduced Marvel to Magic, Spider-Man becomes the first comprehensive comic-inspired set. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains this decision stems from the need to properly represent Spider-Man's expansive universe.
"Spider-Man demands a full set to truly honor his legacy..."
"Spider-Man demands a full set to truly honor his legacy and incorporate his famous rogues' gallery," McCall states. "Limiting Spider-Man characters to a broader Marvel set would force painful cuts. We might've squeezed Gwen Stacy or Miles Morales elsewhere, but Aunt May simply couldn't be left out."
McCall notes that Universes Beyond designs "invert traditional worldbuilding"—while standard Magic sets must establish settings through gameplay, beloved characters like Spider-Man come with instant recognition. "When we create cards reflecting 'great power, great responsibility,' we can introduce mechanical depth because players already grasp the narrative. We're freed from simplification—we just need iconic moments that resonate."
Regarding mechanical translation, Head Designer Mark Rosewater confirms Magic's color pie accommodates superhero dynamics: "All five colors can express heroism and villainy." He identifies Spider-Man as white, blue, and green (though his Scene Box iteration uses only white and blue).
"Spider-Man's responsibility-driven heroism anchors him in white. His scientific origin—the radioactive bite and web-shooters—embodies blue. Meanwhile, his arachnid abilities and thematic destiny place him firmly in green."
"We're embracing the entire Spider-Man mythology."
Beyond the Scene Box, the set will feature Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs (all visible above). While lacking Commander decks, it revives Welcome Decks—introductory products that help newcomers learn Magic's basics.
Following this year's Final Fantasy and upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender sets, Wizards will release two Magic-original expansions: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and cosmic Edge of Eternities.
