Sony Unveils New AAA Studio for PlayStation

Sony's Unveiling of a New AAA Game Studio in Los Angeles

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is confirmed by a recent job posting. This marks Sony's 20th first-party studio and is dedicated to developing a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5.

The secrecy surrounding this studio has ignited speculation among gaming enthusiasts. The industry's anticipation for new projects from established PlayStation studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games is always high. Sony's recent acquisitions of Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite further demonstrate their commitment to expanding their first-party development capabilities. This latest, unannounced studio adds another exciting element to their lineup.

Potential Origins of the New Studio

Two prominent theories exist regarding the origins of this Los Angeles-based studio. One suggests it's a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the Gummybears incubation project and the subsequent integration of 155 Bungie employees into Sony Interactive Entertainment following layoffs in July 2024.

Alternatively, the studio could be comprised of the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell's previous involvement with PlayStation as co-founder of Deviation Games, a studio shuttered in March 2024, adds weight to this theory. Many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation in May 2024, under Blundell's leadership, fueling speculation about their involvement in this new venture. Considering the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that this is the studio in question. The nature of their project remains undisclosed, but there's speculation it might be a continuation or a reboot of Deviation Games' previous AAA endeavor.

Regardless of its origins, the existence of this new studio is a welcome announcement for PlayStation fans, promising another first-party game to look forward to, even if an official reveal remains some time away.
