Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

by Oliver Mar 17,2025

Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These beloved themes, which add nostalgic imagery and sounds from past consoles, are leaving the PlayStation Store tomorrow, January 31st, 2025. However, Sony assures fans that these popular themes will return at a later date. The company thanked players for the enthusiastic response and stated they are working to bring the themes back in the coming months.

While this news is positive for those who missed out or want another chance to enjoy these themes, Sony also confirmed that there are currently no plans to release additional console themes beyond these four. This announcement has been met with some disappointment from fans who hoped for a wider selection of themed designs for their PS5 consoles. The absence of extensive theme customization options on the PS5 has been a point of contention for some users, as this was a feature in previous PlayStation generations.

The limited-time themes, released in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3rd, 2024, offered a visually and audibly immersive trip down memory lane. The PS1 theme featured the classic console on the home screen background; the PS2 theme incorporated its distinctive menu shapes; the PS3 theme showcased its iconic wave background; and the PS4 theme similarly featured its wave patterns. Each theme also included the corresponding console's boot-up and menu sound effects.
