Silksong Update Hints at Nintendo Direct 2

by Layla Feb 24,2025

Six years have passed since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Throughout this time, fans have witnessed Silksong's sporadic appearances and absences at various gaming events, even a seemingly confirmed pre-June 2023 release by Microsoft. The Game Awards came and went without a Silksong reveal. However, could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally bring the news?

The Hollow Knight fanbase believes so, and it all hinges on a picture of a cake.

Sharp-eyed fans on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry's co-director, William Pellen, updated his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. He tweeted: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

With rumors swirling about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, the announcement indeed arrived that day. While many questions remain about Nintendo's next-gen console, the timing fueled speculation. Did Pellen's tweet hint at the Switch 2 reveal, and if so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's theories exploded. Fans reverse-image searched the cake, leading them to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit. The recipe's publication date: April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. Fans believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the tweet and cake image.

The investigation continues. Fans are deciphering Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. One compelling theory suggests the "wr" might be part of a longer word, possibly related to a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The 15-character handle limit further supports this theory.

Adding to the mystery, Pellen adopted a new X/Twitter name: little bomey. While similar to a Southern Australian wine (Team Cherry's location), the slight spelling difference adds another layer of intrigue.

It's crucial to remember that Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement confirmed releases on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, six years later, has Nintendo secured Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title, or perhaps a timed exclusive? Or is this all simply the fervent speculation of eager fans?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's review everything unveiled at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
