Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti recently provided an update on the long-awaited live-action adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While development began over a decade ago (Sony announced the project in 2009, with game director Fumito Ueda involved), the film hasn't been shelved. Muschietti, known for It and The Flash, clarified that ongoing discussions regarding budget and the intellectual property's immense popularity are influencing the timeline.

The announcement comes alongside Sony's recent reveal of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including a Helldivers film, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated project.

Muschietti emphasized on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso that the Shadow of the Colossus film is "absolutely not abandoned." He acknowledged the extended development time, explaining that factors beyond creative vision, specifically the IP's popularity and the resulting budgetary considerations, are playing a significant role. He confirmed the existence of a preferred script among several versions.

The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact is undeniable, influencing titles like Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2. While Muschietti isn't a self-described "hardcore gamer," he considers the game a "masterpiece" and has played it multiple times. The game's legacy continues, even with the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, and this adaptation aims to capture its essence for both existing fans and newcomers. The director's involvement, along with Ueda's original vision (and his recent announcement of a new sci-fi game at The Game Awards 2024), suggests a continued commitment to bringing this unique story to the big screen.
