Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

by Nora Apr 03,2025

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has recently canceled an unannounced incubation project, leading to the layoff of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news initially surfaced through a now-deleted LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who shared that they were part of the project for the past year and are now seeking new employment opportunities alongside other talented individuals from the project.

IGN independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project, which was developed by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source familiar with the project described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.

This cancellation adds to a series of similar actions across Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023 with the elimination of 50 positions at BioWare and an unknown number at Codemasters. The trend continued almost a year ago when EA laid off 670 employees company-wide and canceled multiple projects, including the Star Wars FPS. As part of those cuts, approximately two dozen Respawn employees were affected. Since then, EA has restructured BioWare, shifting developers to other internal projects and laying off more key personnel.

IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for further comment on these developments.
