RDR2 Rumored for Switch 2 by 2025, Next-Gen Patch Expected

by Aaron May 17,2025

Exciting news for fans of Red Dead Redemption 2—a port to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 could hit the shelves by the end of 2025. According to GameReactor, insiders close to Rockstar Games have hinted at a Switch 2 version of this beloved Wild West epic. Alongside the port, a "next-gen upgrade patch" is reportedly in the works, enhancing the gaming experience on current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. While the details remain sparse, these sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could be available as early as later this year.

This aligns with reports from Nintenduo, which also mention that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to launch within Take-Two's fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. Whether the game will be available digitally or as a physical copy is still up in the air.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 first galloped onto the scene in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. Our review praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." Given this acclaim, the prospect of bringing this gem to the Switch 2 doesn't seem out of the question.

Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, expressed "great optimism" for the Nintendo Switch 2 during a Q&A with investors. He highlighted a stronger partnership with Nintendo this time around, noting, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform." These titles include Civilization 7 (launching on June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series, and Borderlands 4 (set for September 12). Zelnick's comments suggest a broader commitment to the platform, hinting at potential future releases from Take-Two's catalog, which could include gems like Red Dead Redemption 2 or even GTA V.

Historically, third-party support for Nintendo platforms has been challenging, but Zelnick's optimism and the announced lineup signal a new era of collaboration. While a Switch 2 version of GTA 6 might be a stretch, the door seems open for other titles from Take-Two's impressive library.
