Prismatic Evolutions Shortage Prompts Pokemon TCG to Rush to Print More
High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to significant shortages of its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, as reported by various sources including IGN on January 16, 2025. The unexpectedly high demand has led to limited availability at launch.
A Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating that they are working to increase production to meet the demand as quickly as possible. While fans may experience delays in acquiring the set, the company assures them that efforts are underway to restore optimal stock levels.
Impact on Retailers
The shortage disproportionately affects smaller, local US Pokémon TCG stores. PokeBeach, a dedicated Pokémon TCG fan website, reported on January 4, 2025, that these stores are facing severe stock limitations due to the unexpected surge in demand. This is partly attributed to stores that don't typically stock Pokémon cards placing large orders, according to Deguire, owner of Player 1 Services in Maryland. Distributors responded by limiting supplies to local retailers by 10-15%, prioritizing larger chains like GameStop and Target.
This scarcity is driving up prices on the secondary market. The Elite Trainer Box, yet to be officially released, is already commanding prices around $127 USD, significantly above its $55 retail price. However, once the Pokémon Company increases supply, these inflated prices are expected to stabilize.
Expansion Details and Release Schedule
Announced on November 1, 2024, and launched on January 17, 2025, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, ultra-rare Supporter cards, and reprints of popular cards with new artwork. Notable reprints include Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Roaring Moon ex, featuring artwork by Yukihiro Tada and Shinji Kanda, respectively.
Additional products, including a Surprise Box, Mini Tin, Booster Bundle, and Pouch Special Collection, are scheduled for release on February 7, March 7, and April 25, 2025, respectively. The set is also available on Pokémon TCG Live for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows devices since January 16, 2025.
