Pokémon TCG Pocket Has No Plans To Go Competitive

The Pokémon Company has confirmed it currently lacks plans to integrate Pokémon TCG Pocket into its competitive esports circuit. This article explores the reasons behind this decision and the game's future competitive prospects.
Pokémon TCG Pocket's Competitive Status: Not Yet

As of February 25, 2025, Pokémon Company eSports Director Chris Brown stated in a VGC interview that while they continually evaluate potential additions to their competitive lineup, Pokémon TCG Pocket isn't currently under consideration. He humorously referenced Pokémon Sleep's unlikely competitive potential before clarifying that no immediate plans exist for Pokémon TCG Pocket's inclusion. However, he emphasized their ongoing assessment of various titles.
Early Stages and Balancing Concerns

While no official reasons have been given, fan speculation points to the game's relative infancy (only four months old as of February 2025, with two sets released since its October 2024 launch) and ongoing balance issues as potential factors. Although in-app competitive features exist, players have voiced concerns regarding game balance. Pokémon TCG Pocket's simplified mechanics, designed for a broader, more casual audience, may also contribute to its current exclusion from the competitive scene.
Despite this, the Pokémon Competitive Circuit remains robust, featuring Pokémon TCG, Pokémon GO, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Pokémon Unite, all showcased at the upcoming Pokémon World Championships in August 2025 in Anaheim, California. Potential New Set Reveal at Pokémon Presents
The upcoming Pokémon Presents event could unveil a new set for Pokémon TCG Pocket, following the January 30, 2025 release of Space Time Smackdown. While the event's contents remain unannounced, speculation abounds regarding significant franchise announcements. Furthermore, with limited news since its initial announcement in 2024, anticipation remains high for updates on Pokémon Legends: Z-A, potentially including reveals related to the previously announced new mega evolutions. The February 27, 2025, Pokémon Presents livestream (6 AM PT / 9 AM ET on YouTube and Twitch) may offer valuable insights into Pokémon's future plans. Visit our Pokémon Day 2025 page for more details.
