Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025

Pokemon GO players using older Android devices face an upcoming challenge. Niantic, the game developer, announced that upcoming updates in March and June 2025 will end support for 32-bit Android devices. This means millions of players risk losing access to their accounts and in-game progress unless they upgrade their phones.

This change affects a range of older models, including but not limited to the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3; Sony Xperia Z2, Z3; Motorola Moto G (1st generation); LG Fortune, Tribute; OnePlus One; HTC One (M8); ZTE Overture 3; and various other Android devices released before 2015. The first update in March will impact some Samsung Galaxy Store users, while the June update specifically targets 32-bit Android devices from Google Play. Importantly, 64-bit Android devices and all iPhones will remain supported.

Niantic advises affected players to safeguard their login credentials. While account access will be restored after upgrading to a compatible device, players will be temporarily locked out, including access to any purchased Pokecoins.

Despite this setback, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. Highly anticipated titles like Pokemon Legends: Z-A are slated for release, alongside rumored projects such as Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new Let's Go installment. While Pokemon GO's 2025 plans remain unclear, a leaked February 27th Pokemon Presents event may offer further details. The impact on the game's substantial player base (over 110 million active players in December 2024) remains to be seen.
