Pokémon TCG Launch Faces Scalping, Shortages, and Outages Again
The latest Pokémon TCG set, Destined Rivals, has been fully unveiled, and the first pre-orders are now open. If you're a seasoned collector, you might not be surprised to hear that the launch has been tumultuous, with scalpers and store issues already affecting the new set's availability.
Revealed on March 24, Scarlet & Violet - Destined Rivals is scheduled to hit the market starting May 30, 2025. This set is highly anticipated for several reasons. Notably, it brings back Trainer's Pokémon cards, a nostalgic feature for those who remember classics like Brock's Sandslash or Rocket's Mewtwo. These cards creatively link beloved Trainers with their Pokémon, adding a unique twist to the game. Additionally, the set focuses on Team Rocket, the iconic villains from Pokémon's first generation, promising a popular release akin to the earlier Prismatic Evolutions set, which celebrated Eevee-lutions.

When pre-orders went live, it was no surprise that chaos ensued. Fans attempting to purchase an Elite Trainer Box (ETB) from the Pokémon Center website faced significant difficulties, often finding themselves unable to access the site. As expected, scalpers quickly listed their ETB pre-orders on platforms like eBay, with prices soaring to several hundred dollars for what typically retails at $54.99. Joe Merrick from Serebii shared his frustration after waiting hours in a queue to secure a Destined Rivals ETB:
"I truly hate this. The way almost all Pokemon TCG content has shifted to financial. The way that people just treat it as investment. The way people just want to flip it. It's disgusting. Shame on all involved."
This situation is unfortunately typical. Previous sets like Prismatic Evolutions and Blooming Waters 151 also faced similar shortages and rapid sell-outs. The Pokémon Company has acknowledged these issues, stating in an online FAQ (via PokéBeach) that more inventory of the Destined Rivals ETB will be available later this year.
Compounding the scalping problem, some buyers have reported their ETB orders being cancelled. The immense demand and popularity of the Pokémon TCG are evident, yet they are also spoiling the hobby for many who simply want to enjoy opening packs or playing the game.
While Pokémon TCG Pocket provides a virtual alternative to the physical scarcity, the frustration for those wishing to engage in the traditional hobby remains. A visit to your local store's card aisle likely illustrates the difficulty of acquiring packs at the moment. This is especially disheartening given the excitement surrounding these new releases. Hopefully, solutions will emerge soon to address these ongoing issues.
