Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead. This surprising statistic, revealed by Sony's Cory Gasaway, prompted the development of the PS5's Welcome Hub. The Hub aims to create a unified user experience despite varying player preferences.

In a Game File interview with Stephen Totilo, Gasaway confirmed that a 50/50 split exists among PS5 users regarding rest mode usage. While rest mode is designed for energy efficiency and convenient background downloads, many players avoid it. This contradicts earlier statements by Jim Ryan, who emphasized Sony's commitment to environmental responsibility through features like rest mode.

As reported by IGN, the Welcome Hub's creation stemmed directly from this 50% rest mode avoidance rate. Initially conceived during a PlayStation hackathon, the Hub presents a consistent starting point for PS5 users, displaying either the Explore page (for US users) or the last played game. This customizable interface addresses the diverse user habits uncovered by Sony's data.

The reasons behind rest mode aversion remain varied. While energy saving is a primary benefit, some users report internet connectivity issues when rest mode is enabled, leading them to keep their consoles fully powered on for downloads. Others experience no such problems and utilize the feature regularly. Gasaway's insights highlight the importance of considering diverse user behaviors in console UI design.
