PlayStation 1 Classics Hit Nintendo Switch

This concludes my retrospective series on retro game eShop offerings. The selection of consoles with diverse game libraries is dwindling, but I saved the best for last: the original PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, building a legendary library with titles still re-released today. While these games initially challenged Nintendo's dominance, now everyone can enjoy them across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa is a fantastic 2.5D platformer that deserves more recognition. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a dangerous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight controls, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel isn't as strong, the collection is a must-have.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A landmark JRPG that introduced the genre to a wider Western audience, Final Fantasy VII propelled both Square Enix and the PlayStation to phenomenal success. Yes, a remake exists, but this is the original FFVII experience, complete with its iconic (if somewhat dated) polygonal graphics. Its enduring appeal is undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. While later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a thrilling, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of a G.I. Joe episode. Plus, the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. The polygonal graphics may show their age, but the vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses make for a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

While Chrono Cross faced the impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits as a clever, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. It also boasts one of the best video game soundtracks ever created.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

Objectively assessing the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 feels particularly polished and well-designed. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this often-overlooked gem.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with satisfying action. From the creator of Ghosts 'n Goblins, it starts easy but progressively challenges players.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a rewarding combat system.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is included in this remastered collection. While quality varies across the five games, the original focuses more on tomb raiding than action, making it a strong entry point.

moon ($18.99)

A Japanese-only release until now, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, offering a more adventure-game-like experience with a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. It’s not always fun, but its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
