Overwatch 2 Makes Triumphant Return to China

by Jacob Feb 21,2025

Overwatch 2's triumphant return to China is set for February 19th, following a two-year absence. A technical test will precede the launch, commencing January 8th and concluding on the 15th. This marks the end of a long wait for Chinese players, who missed 12 seasons of content.

The game's departure stemmed from the termination of Blizzard's contract with NetEase in January 2023. However, a renewed partnership in April 2024 paved the way for Overwatch 2's comeback. The technical test offers Chinese players a chance to experience all 42 heroes, including the newest additions, and the classic 6v6 mode.

The return coincides with the start of Overwatch 2 Season 15. Furthermore, Blizzard's commitment to the Chinese esports scene is solidified with the announcement of the first live Overwatch Championship Series event in Hangzhou in 2025, celebrating the game's re-entry into the Chinese market.

Chinese players have a significant amount of content to explore, including six new heroes (Lifeweaver, Illari, Mauga, Venture, Juno, and Hazard), new game modes (Flashpoint and Clash), several new maps, and numerous hero reworks and balance changes. Unfortunately, they may miss the 2025 Lunar New Year event, though a potential belated celebration is hoped for.
