Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

by Evelyn Feb 10,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected the title with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique physics-based puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey themselves. Its simple yet engaging gameplay earned it numerous awards upon its 2010 release. Now, for the first time in years, Android users with modern operating systems can experience this micro-organic battle.

Hemisphere Games revealed in a blog post that the initial Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update following Apportable's closure. The game's subsequent removal from Google Play, due to incompatibility with current (64-bit) Android systems, paved the way for this much-needed rebuild.

If you need further convincing, a quick glance at the gameplay trailer (above) should suffice. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, somewhat ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent releases. Its pre-social media debut is almost a missed opportunity; its unique gameplay would likely be a viral sensation on platforms like TikTok.

Osmos offers a nostalgic yet rewarding experience, a reminder of a time when mobile gaming felt limitless. While it may be a throwback, its charm remains undeniable. For those seeking more brain-bending mobile challenges, explore our curated list of the top 25 puzzle games for iOS and Android.
