Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Features Confirmed in New Patent

by Bella Feb 27,2025

New Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Patents Reveal Magnetic Attachment and Mouse Functionality

While Nintendo remains officially silent, leaked patents strongly suggest significant changes to the Switch 2's Joy-Cons. Reports of magnetic attachment and mouse functionality are now virtually confirmed by these filings.

The patents describe a game controller with magnetic mounting to the Switch 2 console. The design incorporates two magnets within the console's docking recess and corresponding magnets within the Joy-Cons. Two buttons, positioned longitudinally on the Joy-Con's top, are required for detachment. These buttons are magnetically attracted to the console's magnets, ensuring a secure connection.

Patent illustrations showcase a novel mouse-like functionality. Holding the Joy-Con sideways, the R1 and R2 buttons function as left and right mouse clicks, respectively, with joystick movement potentially providing scrolling capabilities. The patents also depict both dual-mouse and hybrid configurations (one Joy-Con as a mouse, the other as a standard controller).

The magnetic attachment was an early Switch 2 leak, but the mouse functionality is a more recent revelation, still awaiting official confirmation. However, a January teaser subtly hinted at this feature, showing Joy-Cons smoothly moving across a surface.
