Nintendo Hints at New 3D Mario for Switch 2: 'Stay Tuned'

by Ava Apr 22,2025

Nintendo is dropping hints that a new 3D Mario game could be on the horizon, though we're still in the dark about the specifics. During a recent interview with CNN, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser addressed the clamor for another mainline Mario entry. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, he suggested that fans won't have to wait too long to see something new.

"Stay tuned," Bowser teased. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."

Although Bowser's words don't serve as a definitive announcement, they offer a glimmer of hope for fans who were disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup. Earlier this month, Nintendo unveiled its hybrid console sequel and showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World. However, a traditional 3D Mario platformer was noticeably missing from the reveal.

It's been nearly eight years since the last flagship Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, launched in October 2017, just months after the original Switch hit the market. While Donkey Kong Bananza might tide fans over for now, it's not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 announcement many were hoping for. Given Mario's iconic status within Nintendo's extensive catalog, as Bowser mentioned, it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario game emerge soon.

As we await more news on a new mainline Mario adventure, you can stay updated with Nintendo’s Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025. In the meantime, catch up on everything revealed during last week’s Mario Kart World Direct and read our hands-on thoughts on Donkey Kong Bananza.
