MultiVersus to Shut Down After Season 5

Warner Bros. Games has announced the closure of MultiVersus, effective May 30, 2025, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The news, shared via the official MultiVersus Twitter (X) account and website on January 31, 2025, confirmed that Season 5 will be the game's last content update.

MultiVersus Season 5: A Final Farewell

Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will introduce two new playable characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). All Season 5 content, including these new characters, will be unlockable through gameplay. Following the season's end on May 30, 2025, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.

Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy

While online play ends, MultiVersus will offer a local gameplay mode accessible offline. This mode allows solo play against AI or multiplayer with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus between February 4, 9 AM PST and May 30, 9 AM PDT. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's online account, preserving all earned and purchased content. Real-money transactions for Gleamium ceased on January 31, 2025, but existing Gleamium can be used until Season 5 ends.

A Brief History and Uncertain Future

Initially launched in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity as a free-to-play fighting game similar to Super Smash Bros., but with a 2v2 team-based focus. The game underwent a relaunch in May 2024, incorporating new features like rollback netcode and a PvE mode. Despite these improvements, the game faced challenges including technical issues, disconnections, and player concerns about microtransactions. Reports indicated a significant drop in player count in July 2024.

Upon its closure on May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PDT, MultiVersus will leave behind a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. Until then, MultiVersus remains available for download on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
