Marvel Snap Impacted by TikTok Ban: What's Next?
If there's one headline that dominated the weekend, it was undoubtedly the temporary ban of TikTok in the United States. This ban, which had been looming due to a congressional act labeling it as a "foreign adversary controlled application," finally came into effect on Sunday. However, the situation quickly evolved as President-elect Donald Trump pledged to reinstate the service, and ByteDance swiftly brought TikTok back online. Yet, not all of ByteDance's applications enjoyed such a swift return to service.
A prime example is Marvel Snap, the popular comic-themed card battler. Alongside other ByteDance subsidiary releases like Moonton’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Marvel Snap was abruptly taken offline in the U.S. with a message stating it had been banned. ByteDance's message was clear: accept all their offerings or get none at all.
The twist? It appears that developer Second Dinner was not forewarned about this move, leaving them scrambling to manage the fallout on social media. They've promised to restore Marvel Snap to service as soon as possible, but this incident raises serious and troubling questions.
Catch! It doesn't take a political science degree (which I don't have) to recognize that ByteDance's strategy of taking TikTok offline and positioning Trump as its potential savior was a calculated move to generate buzz. The strategy paid off, allowing TikTok to make a dramatic return to the U.S. market.
However, this political maneuvering also affected other gaming releases, seemingly leaving some ByteDance developers in the lurch. Second Dinner, for instance, had to offer lucrative free rewards to compensate for the downtime players experienced. While this might not push them to end their partnership with ByteDance, it certainly hasn't boosted their confidence. The message seems clear: mobile gaming is secondary to ByteDance's lucrative social media operations.
Game overThis isn't the first time ByteDance has signaled that gaming takes a backseat to its social media endeavors. In 2023, their gaming division underwent massive layoffs, canceling many unlaunched projects. Marvel Snap initially suggested a new direction towards partnerships rather than in-house development. Yet, such a significant breach of trust could make other developers and publishers wary of getting entangled in ByteDance's next political skirmish.
Disney, too, must be feeling the impact, especially with the recent release of NetEase’s Marvel Rivals, which boosted mobile gaming through a crossover collaboration. While ByteDance may have outmaneuvered politicians, players, developers, and IP holders are likely to be less forgiving.
They think it’s all over…Rumors suggest that ByteDance's situation might just be the beginning. Other Chinese gaming giants like Tencent and NetEase could be next in the crosshairs. The FTC has already targeted MiHoYo over loot boxes, and this high-profile incident may not deter future political actions against gaming companies.
What might the future hold? The unexpected ban of Marvel Snap made even those indifferent to TikTok take notice. ByteDance's gamble succeeded, setting a concerning precedent. The question remains: how will people react when their favorite games become pawns in international political games? The old adage about bread and circuses could come back to haunt everyone involved.
