Marvel Rivals Ban Risks for Rule-Breaking

NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Bans

NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing mods. The company explicitly stated that any modification of the game, regardless of whether it's cosmetic or provides gameplay advantages, violates the terms of service and risks a permanent ban.

This announcement follows the release of Season 1, which included hero adjustments, the addition of Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic (with Human Torch and The Thing promised in future updates), and a (quickly bypassed) anti-modding system checking game asset hashes. Despite this, workarounds have emerged, allowing modifications such as transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy. One such mod, created by user Prafit and available on Nexus Mods, has garnered over 500 downloads. While Prafit warned users of potential account bans, the mod remains accessible.

While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding, the company's position is firm: modifying Marvel Rivals is against the rules. Although some mods, including one featuring Donald Trump, have been removed from Nexus Mods, the prevalence of workarounds suggests a continuing challenge for the developers. The long-term consequences of this modding activity remain to be seen, but the risk of account suspension is clearly stated. Marvel Rivals, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, continues to enjoy popularity despite this ongoing issue.
