Marvel vs Capcom 2 Original Characters May Show Up in Capcom Fighting Games
Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return in "a new game" is "always there."
This renewed interest stems from the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, a remastered collection of classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This collection features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon, who have been largely absent from recent installments beyond minor cameos.
Matsumoto emphasized that the collection provides a prime opportunity to reintroduce these characters to a wider audience. He suggested that significant fan interest could even lead to their inclusion in titles outside the Versus series, such as Street Fighter 6. "If there's enough interest," he stated, "maybe there's a chance they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He also highlighted the creative potential this presents for Capcom.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself has been in development for several years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also expressed Capcom's desire to create a new Versus title and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms, acknowledging the challenges of scheduling and collaborations. The success of the Fighting Collection will likely play a significant role in determining the future of these beloved characters and other classic Capcom fighting games.
Matsumoto concluded by stating that re-releasing classic titles is a crucial step in energizing the community and gauging interest for future projects. The future of these original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 characters, and indeed other legacy titles, hinges on fan response and the success of the upcoming Fighting Collection.
