Lionsgate's Monopoly Movie Gets Script by Dungeons & Dragons Writers

by Allison Apr 13,2025

The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has secured its writers, with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, set to pen the screenplay. This exciting announcement came today, confirming that the film will be based on Hasbro's iconic board game. Adding to the anticipation, Margot Robbie will produce the film under her production banner, LuckyChap.

Daley and Goldstein bring a wealth of experience to the project, having not only written and directed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves but also their original film, Mayday. Their writing credits extend to high-profile films like The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and skill in the industry.

The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to write the script, but the project did not materialize. Another attempt in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating on a version written by Andrew Niccol, and by 2019, there were reports of Kevin Hart and director Tim Story being involved. However, none of these efforts came to fruition.

The current momentum for the Monopoly movie stems from Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, which has revitalized the project. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay and Margot Robbie's involvement as a producer, there's renewed hope that this version will successfully "pass Go" and bring the beloved board game to life on the big screen.
