Jon Favreau's Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Series Coming to Disney+
Jon Favreau, a seasoned veteran in the world of Disney movies, is teaming up with the entertainment giant once again to bring a beloved classic to life on Disney+. The acclaimed actor and director is set to work his magic on a series featuring the iconic Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, blending his expertise in both live-action and animation to create a captivating TV show. Favreau will take on the roles of writer and producer for this exciting project, although specific details such as the plot and casting have yet to be disclosed.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit holds a special place in Disney's rich history of animated characters. Conceived by Walt Disney himself, Oswald graced the screen in 26 silent cartoons from 1927 to 1928. However, due to a rights dispute, Universal gained control of the character, leading to a challenging period for Disney that ultimately paved the way for the creation of Mickey Mouse. As detailed in our in-depth look at Disney's 100-year history, Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald in 2006, and in 2022, released its first new original short starring the character in 95 years. Now, Disney is poised to revive Oswald in a more significant way, with Favreau's live-action and animation hybrid series set to debut on Disney+ at a future date.
While Favreau is currently focused on breathing new life into one of Disney's oldest animated characters, he has also been deeply involved in some of the company's most recent and popular universes. Star Wars enthusiasts will recognize him as a key figure driving the franchise forward with projects such as The Mandalorian, Skeleton Crew, and Ahsoka. Additionally, Favreau has left an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, both behind and in front of the camera, over the past 15 years, including directing the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Fans can look forward to seeing him direct again with The Mandalorian and Grogu, slated for a theatrical release in 2026.
As Oswald the Lucky Rabbit prepares for his official return to the Disney fold, it's worth noting that the character made a recent appearance in a very different context. In 2023, just one year after entering the public domain, Oswald starred in Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole, a horror movie featuring Ghostbusters actor Ernie Hudson.
