John Lithgow Reveals He'll Play Dumbledore in HBO's Harry Potter TV Series

by Elijah Feb 26,2025

HBO's highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series has reportedly secured its Dumbledore: Veteran actor John Lithgow.

While neither HBO nor Warner Bros. have officially confirmed the casting, Lithgow himself revealed in a ScreenRant interview that he's accepted the role. He described the decision as challenging, stating it will significantly define the final chapter of his career. He humorously noted he'll be approximately 87 years old by the time filming wraps.

This marks the first confirmed casting for the upcoming series, which will re-adapt J.K. Rowling's books with a completely new ensemble cast. Rowling will serve as executive producer alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

The lack of a full cast suggests the series is still in its early stages of development, with production likely some time away. Lithgow, a renowned actor with credits including "3rd Rock from the Sun" and his Emmy-winning portrayal of Winston Churchill in "The Crown," brings considerable experience and prestige to the role.
