Last of Us II: Brutal Scenes Omitted From Game

by Harper Feb 21,2025

HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will feature previously cut content from the video game The Last of Us Part II, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will revive "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the game's "Lost Levels," partially restored in the PS5 remaster. These levels, including "Jackson Party," "The Hunt," and "Seattle Sewers," offer diverse tones, ranging from relatively peaceful moments (Ellie at a party, tracking a boar) to the intense horror characteristic of the game.

This restored content promises a gripping viewing experience. Druckmann hinted at the inclusion of a "pretty prominent" character only mentioned in the game, similar to Season 1's handling of Frank. Season 2 introduces numerous new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel, alongside Catherine O'Hara in an undisclosed role.

Season 2's premiere is slated for April, but the narrative arc of Part II will extend beyond a single season. Unlike Season 1's complete adaptation of the first game, showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Part II's story necessitates a longer treatment. While a Season 3 renewal remains unconfirmed, Season 2's seven episodes are designed with a "natural breakpoint."
