"HBO's 'The Last of Us' Season 2: Abby's Physique Explained by Neil Druckmann"

In the upcoming HBO adaptation of "The Last of Us Part 2," the character Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, will not be as muscular as in the video game. Showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann explained to Entertainment Weekly that this change is due to the different storytelling priorities in the TV series. In the game, Abby's distinct physicality was necessary for gameplay mechanics, where players alternate between controlling her and Ellie. Druckmann highlighted that Abby's role in the game was designed to feel more like Joel, characterized by brute strength and physical dominance.

However, in the TV adaptation, the focus shifts from constant violent action to drama. Druckmann emphasized that while action scenes are still present, they are not the primary focus. This shift allows for a different portrayal of Abby, where physical strength is less emphasized. Druckmann praised Dever's casting, noting that finding someone as talented as her was crucial, even if it meant altering Abby's physical appearance.

Craig Mazin, the co-showrunner, added that this adaptation offers a unique opportunity to explore a version of Abby who might be physically more vulnerable but possesses a strong spirit. This new approach raises questions about the sources of her strength and how it manifests, themes that will be explored both in Season 2 and potentially in future seasons.

HBO plans to extend the story of "The Last of Us Part 2" beyond a single season, unlike the first season which covered the entire original game. Mazin mentioned that Season 2 has a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes, hinting at the possibility of a Season 3, though it has not been officially confirmed yet.

The character of Abby has stirred significant controversy and toxicity among some fans, leading to real-world harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game. The intensity of this backlash prompted HBO to provide extra security for Dever during the filming of Season 2. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in the series, remarked on the absurdity of such strong negative reactions towards a fictional character.
