Gunn Confirms: Superman's Flight, Zero CGI

by Aaliyah Mar 12,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addressed online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression in a recent TV spot. The 30-second spot featured new footage: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy landscape, possibly near the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. The Superman shot sparked debate, with some viewers noting his face appeared unusually still while his hair and cape billowed in the wind. Some attributed this to CGI issues.

However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot contains no CGI on Superman's face. He explained that the effect might be due to the close-up wide-angle lens used. He confirmed the Svalbard, Norway location and David Corenswet's performance as entirely real.

Despite Gunn's explanation, discussion continues, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Nevertheless, anticipation for the Superman film remains high. The film, opening July 11, 2025, is the inaugural film of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
