God of War Series: Not Cancelled, but Rebooted

Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War TV series. Despite reportedly having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision. This decision signifies a complete restart, not a cancellation.

Key figures remaining on board include Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog (executive producer), PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. The search is now on for a new showrunner and production team to steer the project in a new direction.

Delays, But Still On Track

Initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, the God of War TV adaptation follows the success of the 2018 video game reboot. This project is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television. This initiative, spearheaded by PlayStation Productions (founded in 2019), has already yielded successful projects like Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), the Gran Turismo film (2023), and Twisted Metal (2023). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the upcoming Until Dawn film (April 25, 2025). While this reboot introduces delays, it confirms the series remains a priority for Sony and Amazon.
