Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin

Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its initial decision to remove the style, ensuring players can still acquire it.

The return of the Master Chief skin, originally released in 2020, was highly anticipated by the Fortnite community. While the overall Winterfest event has been well-received, the initial announcement regarding the Matte Black style's unavailability sparked considerable controversy. This reversal follows a December 23rd announcement stating the style's removal, contradicting previous assurances that it would remain unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players after purchase. Epic Games has now clarified that the Matte Black style will indeed remain accessible as originally promised.

The Master Chief Skin's Controversial Return

The initial announcement regarding the Matte Black style generated significant negative reaction from fans, with concerns raised about potential FTC violations. This comes on the heels of a $72 million refund issued by the FTC to Fortnite players due to Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The dissatisfaction stemmed from the impact on both new and existing Master Chief skin owners, as even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the style.

This isn't the only recent skin-related controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also provoked mixed reactions, with some long-time players threatening to abandon the game. Currently, some players are advocating for an "OG" style for those who purchased the Master Chief skin upon its initial release, although Epic Games seems unlikely to implement this.
