FFXIV Mobile Version Listed in China's Lineup of Approved Games
Recent reports from Niko Partners, a video game market research firm, suggest a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent to develop a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV for the Chinese market. This follows earlier, unconfirmed reports of such a collaboration.
FFXIV Mobile Game: Unconfirmed, But Promising
Niko Partners' report lists 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA), including a mobile FFXIV title reportedly developed by Tencent. While the news is exciting, it's crucial to note that this information is largely based on industry speculation and hasn't received official confirmation from either Square Enix or Tencent.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners, in an August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, indicated the mobile FFXIV game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, he emphasized that this detail stems primarily from industry discussions.
Tencent's involvement aligns with its prominent position in the mobile gaming market. This rumored partnership with Square Enix reflects Square Enix's stated May strategy of aggressively pursuing multiplatform releases for key franchises like Final Fantasy. The potential launch in China represents a significant step in this broader multiplatform approach.
