Elon Musk Account Boosting Ban Debate Unresolved by Diablo 4, PoE 2 Devs

by Thomas Feb 21,2025

Elon Musk's alleged cheating in Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 has sparked controversy, with fans questioning the integrity of the games and the developers' response. Screenshots of a private conversation revealed Musk's admission to paying for account boosting, a violation of both games' terms of service.

Account boosting, where a player pays for another to level up their account, is a clear breach of Blizzard Entertainment's and Grinding Gear Games' rules. Despite public outcry and calls for bans, both companies have remained silent on whether they will take action against Musk's accounts.

Forum posts on both Battle.net and Path of Exile's official forums express significant player disappointment at the lack of response from the developers. Many feel that the lack of action undermines the fairness of the games and the enforcement of their rules against real-money trading (RMT).

While Musk has previously boasted about his gaming skills, including a claim of being in Diablo 4's top 20 players globally, his performance has been questioned. His gameplay streams have drawn criticism for a perceived lack of understanding of game mechanics, fueling suspicions of account boosting.

A video released by YouTuber NikoWrex showcased a direct message exchange with Musk, where Musk explicitly admitted to account boosting, claiming it was necessary to compete with Asian players. He also clarified that while his streamed gameplay was genuine, his high-level character achievements were not solely his own.

Musk's ex-partner, Grimes, defended him on Twitter, citing personal observations of his gaming prowess in other titles. However, further allegations surfaced when Musk's Path of Exile 2 character appeared active while he was attending an event in Washington D.C., raising further questions about his gaming habits. Both Blizzard and Grinding Gear Games have declined to comment on the matter, citing their policy of not discussing individual player accounts.
