Dungeons & Dragons Live Action Netflix Series in the Works, Could Launch a ‘D&D Universe’

Netflix is developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series based on the Forgotten Realms setting, according to Deadline. The project, one of Netflix's largest fantasy TV investments, will be helmed by Shawn Levy (director of Deadpool and Free Guy), with Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) serving as writer and showrunner. The series is currently in development, and while Netflix and Hasbro haven't commented, Deadline reports that a pilot script has been written and the potential exists for a larger D&D universe to emerge from its success. Negotiations for the IP rights were lengthy but ultimately successful.

While this Netflix series is promising, a sequel to the well-received Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves remains uncertain. Despite Chris Pine's enthusiasm for a return and his confidence in a sequel, Paramount Pictures' CEO, Brian Robbins, has indicated that a lower budget would be a prerequisite for a second film. In the meantime, Amazon's Secret Level anthology series features a D&D animated segment.
