Dune: Awakening Developers Explain Sandworm Behavior

by Blake Mar 17,2025

In Dune: Awakening, sandworms are a formidable force of nature, not controllable entities. Unlike in Frank Herbert's novels where characters use thumpers to summon them, this mechanic is absent from the game.

Sandworms are independent NPCs, programmed with their own patrol routes and behaviors. You can't summon one to attack opponents. However, actions like moving through the sand or using a thumper might attract their attention, though there's no guarantee.

Riding sandworms, a staple of Fremen culture in the books and films, is currently unavailable in Dune: Awakening. The developers attribute this omission to constraints from the Dune film franchise.

Future updates may add more Fremen-related content, potentially including worm-riding. For now, this iconic aspect of the Dune universe remains unconfirmed for the game.

Dune: Awakening launches on PC May 20th, with console versions to follow.
